Chanderi, 2007, film recon

Mar 08, 2007 08:33

One of he big goals on this trip
was to find a couple super highly skilled weavers
to focus on as subjects for the film.
We were lucky enough
to meet about a half dozen

When I get a chance,
and I don't have to keep running off to work
in 15 minutes (like right now)
I have to write on LJ the events of our days
in Chanderi.
At every turn we made these incredible wish-list style connections.
For example during our first day in Chanderi
we bumped into and made good friends
with Minja the UNESCO representative
and UNESCO director for India,
who happened to be in Chanderi
doing some field work.
She was traveling with a French textile historian
who has been researching Chanderi fabric.
Also in their party acting as guide and
a source of running colorful commentary
was Aditya, the brother in law
of the present Maharani of Baroda.
All three of them were in Chanderi
for a day and a half and they had arrived
the same night as us.
I mean talk about synchronicity.

And you see for the past year
I have been trying fruitlessly to contact
the present Maharani of Baroda, Shubhanginiraje Gaekwad
(its not easy getting mail through to an India Royal).
She is one of the main patrons who has taken
it upon herself to preserve weaving traditions
in Chanderi. And here on our first day in town
right across from us at breakfast
was her brother in law and her textile researcher.

More on this later
I have to go to my stupid regular job...

Here are portraits that N~ took
of a couple of the highest skilled weavers in Chanderi.

Weaver Shakhir Mohamad with apprentice weaver Ahmed Ichaker in the background.

Weavers Harcharan Koli & Ghanshyam Koli

and I showed this photo before but to put it into context

this is an example of the sari that those two old guys are making on the hand loom
in the above photo.
That's all for now, "grrr" off to stupid work...
