cars in chidambaram

The last temple town on this trip, Chidambaram.
There was so much here, and I did much wandering over a few days. By this time in the trip I had become so cultured-out, I felt as if I could stand at least a step back from the obvious and see some of the less obvious details. Well at least a "one step back" less than obvious. And obviously South India is so layered, to break the skin one becomes nearly overwhelmed. When John Lennon wrote in India and sang "glass onion" he was talking about this.

They call these things "cars" and they just sit parked outside the temples waiting for festivals when they are dressed up with huge towering canopies the gods of the temple installed and "driven around the temple grounds.

How old are they? Well if you think that these particular "cars" are wheeled around the temple grounds twice a year, then look at the tread wear on the wheels themselves, you might get an idea of how many years they have been around.

The cars are wood carved
