Kumbakonam

I am a devoted fan of hand painted signs. Here in the US it's a dying art. Old men sign painters, with their paint splattered special step ladders, antique tool carriers, with flash brushes, those odd levels and hand steadiers, civilized gents, slow and meticulous, preferably with a white handlebar mustache and bifocals. Those dudes Rock!

anyway,

In India the sign painter is still going strong. I saw this totally unusual hand painted bike box in Kumbakonam while in Tamil Nadu. It was beautiful and I took a photo. Since I can't read Tamil I posted the pic on the lj indiaphotocommunity for a translation and got a pretty instant response. Thanks sriniram for his translation and some commentary.

It's a feminist message describing the Tamil woman. The box is usually used to carry books and other knick knacks, the owner of the cycle maybe a college student.

(text to the left of the woman)
"The other side of some women..."

(text to the right of the cobra)
"Annoy her, and the tamil woman will strike?"

(Artist's signature in lower right corner)
"S.M. Muthu"
