madonna with child

This was taken at the Sri Jambukeswara temple in Tamil Nadu.
Nearly every of the 100s of pillars in the temple have images of gods and their mythic stories. I saw this really unique and beautiful carving and had to take a photo. This part of the temple was built by the Vijayanagara's around the 1500s. It looks like a Madonna with the child Christ. I was told its Devaki with the child Krishna.

I thought the carving was really striking because the figures and clothing have what look like Greek sculpture influences. Its all very mysterious.

Krishna's mother was a simple country woman. The story is that Krishna was by divine intervention placed in Devaki's womb. Krishna is an incarnation of Vishnu. Meaning Krishna is the son of God. He was born in a pastoral setting amid cowherds at midnight, and taken to be raised in a small village. The similarities to the birth and childhood of Jesus is totally noted. Jesus and Krishna were both born at around the same time in world history.
