Why I appear lazy.

I often find myself wasting time at work. It's something I realize and I wish I didn't do, so I often contemplate it (as most introverts do). I think it boils down to a lack of motivation. Say I bust my ass and the company saves an extra $5000 a year, do I see any of that? No. I need a reason to do something. I consider myself a loyal mercenary. If you compensate me, I'll be there till the end otherwise I'll have a lack of desire to do anything for you.

If this sounds like something out of Office Space, it is. For people that have never worked in a cubicle world ... it's just like the movie. Seriously.

I can remember my first job. I busted my ass for probably 7 of the 9 months there. The first two months they didn't really give me anything to do and I was ready to hang myself out of boredom. They finally gave me stuff to do. Then they gave me more ... and more ... and more ... and more. By my 5th month there I was probably working close to 60 hour weeks. I was the lowest paid employee on the project, yet I was putting in more time than any one else barring the consultants over the project. I finally hit my breaking point there and when they asked me to come in on a weekend I lied and told them I couldn't. That didn't sit well with them, so I was canned later that day. I really didn't care and to be honest I feel like it was a blessing.

Fast forward about 3 months later and the project had reached it theoretical completion date (I say theoretical because they used my firing as an excuse to drop about a large portion of the requirements.). I talk to one of my former co-workers and she tells me that all the higher ups got bonuses/raises (people who did next to nothing ... literally) and the consultants got a nice bonus. Did anyone in my group that was doing most of the labor get a bonus or a raise? Nope. As a result of this experience, I'll no longer bust my ass without compensation.

I really do want to work hard, but I'll be no slave. I'd love to own my business. I think a business can be 10 times more profitible when the employees are happy. I'll point to Google on that one. Greed is a problem that plagues businesses these days as well as parts of "life". There's nothing wrong with ambition, but ambition without end is simply greed.

This is why I appear lazy.

work, lazy
