Bruce Willis

Last year we heard that actor Bruce Willis was retiring because he had a brain condition which made it difficult for him to learn lines for his movie roles.

Most recently we read that they know what the disease is and that there is no treatment for it.

Very sad.

Yet, what a body of performances he has given us!

My spreadsheet shows I own 13 movies starring Bruce Willis, but I believe there are more: Die Hard (1988), Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990), Pulp Fiction (1994), 12 Monkeys (1997), The Fifth Element (1997), Armegeddon (1998), Mercury Rising (1998), The Jackal (1998), The Sixth Sense (1999), Live Free or Die Hard (2007), Surrogates (2009), RED (2010), and Looper (2012)

I did not yet have Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) and A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), the other two of the five Die Hard movies, however decided to splurge and buy them to-day.

I would like to see Hart's War (2002). I am pretty sure I have not seen that or own it. There is also Billy Bathgate (1991), The Player (1992), and Striking Distance (1993). Earlier there was The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), but not so sure it is my kind of movie. The Expendables (2010) and The Expendables 2 (2012) looks interesting. There is also Sin City (2005) and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).

Glass (2019) looks interesting and stars Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson, who were both in Unbreakable. It is a follow-up to Unbreakable (2000) and a movie that Bruce Willis was not in, Split (2016), with the star there also in Glass. So, if I were to watch Glass, then I should first watch Unbreakable and then Split. I do not have any of these.

I have seen him in Death Becomes Her (1992): his comedic role was interesting, but atypical for his movies, although probably more akin to his role in the television series Moonlighting (which I have not seen, although would like to check it out). Bruce Willis voices the child in Look Who's Talking (1989) and Look Who's Talking Too (1990). Not rushing to see those, but maybe some day. Bruce Willis was an excellent voice actor and his voice pops into all sorts of productions, including an episode of "The Orville."

I know I have dvds of a few television episodes he did: Shatterday from The Twilight Zone (1985) and he played the role of Tony Amato in an episode of Miami Vice in 1984.

Also I have seen In Country (1999). This movie was made in Mayfield Kentucky when I lived nearby in Murray, Kentucky. I went to the Paducah, KY premiere of the movie. It was a good movie but do not have a copy of it. Also atypical performance for Bruce Willis, it was a drama and he played it well. Still, I remember a supporting actor's line from the movie: "I've never been out of my own time zone."

I did not have RED 2 (2013). I splurged and got it to-day from Amazon along with the two Die Hard movies I did not have.

Bruce Willis has been in a number of movies since 2013 but I have not kept up. Unfortunately many of them may not be quite as good as his other films. His last movie will be released this year, the 3rd in a series of Detective Knight films, this one: "Detective Knight: Independence." I should look at the trailers for movies he made since 2013 and see if they would be worth watching.

For me, his greatest character was the role he played in Die Hard. I don't remember The Jackal or Mercury Rising so need to watch those.
