Preparing for an electric car

Jan 21, 2021 07:54

The choices for electric cars are still few and far between.

I saw an advert on-line for a VW dealership and asked if VW had an electric. The response was a 2019 model called an E-Golf.

However, no 2020 or 2021 E-Golfs. In fact, the E-Golf won't be offered anymore.

Instead, VW has something called an ID-4 (a stupid name for a car) which is bigger than the E-Golf but can have a range of more than 300 miles on a single charge. That seems good, but guess what? Not yet available in the U.S. with no announcement of when it will be here.

Honda also has a good electric vehicle which it has decided not to bring to the U.S.

Time for the U.S. Government to do what it can to persuade companies to get all their e-cars into this country!

In the meantime, want to do what we can to prepare:

* Decide on backroom/basement/access approach by contacting architects.

* Back room prep--remove rotting paneling, carefully remove original siding to reclaim as we can, remove window, put in electrical outlets, insulation, new walls. Besides electrical I can do most of this myself.

* Put insulation in the attic.

* Complete new basement access.

* Finish the back room.

* New house siding elsewhere (or should I say stripping and repairing), new electric, new walls and insulation throughout. Put in the removed window to face outside from dining room. Contracted with some involvement from me.

* Add solar water heater if possible.

* Add solar electric.

* Research and buy an electric bike.

* Add EV charging stations.
