The Mission Play

This is a synopsys of the 1912 "The Mission Play", a "pageant" play about the founding of the California Mission system in the late 1700s and the demise of the system by the mid 1800's.

It was performed in San Gabriel for about 14 years.

Part of the play features Spanish dancing and music. I believe that aspects of that, with some of the performers of the play, were portrayed by photographs of the San Gabriel Mission taken around 1912.

San Gabriel became a city in 1912 and the city does have an annual fiesta which might also be connected with the photo.

There is also a good story about the grapevine, visited by both Willis Vail and by me and Marisa.
