* A Scary Home Companion last Sunday evening: interesting. I was nodding off toward the end. Worthwhile attending. Sunday night easy parking in the park block and it wasn't raining or snowing.
* Vincent Price movie at Hollywood Theater last night (Friday): The House on Haunted Hill. Great to see this movie on 35mm. The print had a few edits, but no words missing. A little scratchy, but only noticeable in the opening black-in. Vincent Price's daughter was there to answer a variety of questions.
--His voice for Thriller was made possible because of a connection through Quincy Jones. Vincent agreed to do it through a small piece of paper that served as his contract. The voice work took only one take. His agent was furious--and Vincent himself was a little disappointed himself--as the song was a huge hit and Vincent only got flat rate for his service.
--Vincent once did a movie in South Africa...a real bad one apparently. He did it because it gave him a chance to visit the country.
--His daughter's favorite movie was The Abominable Dr. Phibes, but Vincent's was a film that is difficult to see, The Eve of St. Mark. Others mentioned: Dragonwyck
--Vincent appeared in 3 films with the actress that played Laura, Gene Tierney. They were friends through some difficult times for both of them--when he was gray-listed (astonishingly for being anti-Nazi before the U.S. had declared war against Germany) and when she had a variety of personal tragedies.
--Vincent is the 3rd Vincent. The first Vincent Price invented baking powder (Calumet) and went on to run a large food manufacturing company in St. Louis, Missouri. The second Vincent Price was a candy-maker. Vincent's brother was pressured into taking over the business while Vincent was allowed to pursue creative endeavors. His brother, who didn't enjoy the business, died of alcoholism. Vincent, knowing he got a good deal, spent a good part of his later life giving speaking tours especially in the rural Midwest, encouraging young people to pursue their passions and trying to get their parents on-board.
* Going to both of these events was trying for me, especially the Friday night event after a long day at work with one thing left undone. Work, in general, was very difficult as I struggled with the weather, early meetings, late meetings and assignments with shifting specifications. I worked at RA1 Monday after arriving a little later than normal because of icy/slippery conditions on Germantown Road (I took I-5/I-405/Sunset Highway instead), then from home Tuesday (early meeting plus road conditions), Wednesday (late meeting previous evening plus some concern with overnight snow) and Friday (early meeting). Did go in Thursday.
* We are feeding the kittens kitten food now and they are really going through the cans. Also, the kittens are relieving themselves on litter topped carpet. We can't keep up with the empty cans (washing them out for recycling).
* I woke up around 8 a.m. to-day, which is about 10 hours of sleep: I needed it.
* At noon took a well-needed shower.
* Weather to-day, cold (mainly due to wind) but mostly sunny and dry.
