Pene Exclaves

A Pene Exclave is land which is politically part of one juristriction, but separated from the main body of that juristiction by a body of water and no land connections.

The most well known is one Marisa and I have visited, the Northwest Angle, but there are a few more we have not visited.

I was informed by a co-worker that the state of Washington has a Pene Exclave: Point Roberts. It a couple of small parks to visit and not much else. It is just a continuation of residential subdivisions in Canada.

Another I have noticed is a part of Kentucky along the Mississippi River which requires you to go to Tennessee. It is called The Kentucky Bend, not very populated, and nearest to Tiptonville, Tennessee.

Carter Lake Iowa is surrounded by Omaha Nebraska but legally part of Iowa. In 1877 a flood straightened the course of the Missouri, stranding this chunk of Iowa on the other side of the river. Legal wrangling kept it as part of Iowa.

Elm Point Minnesota is another Pene Exclave. If the Northwest Angle or The Kentucky Bend are considered uninteresting, then Elm Point would not be appealing. No people live there, there are no structures. Elm Point came from the same mistake that created the Northwest Angle. In fact, if you look at that area on the map there is an even tinier spit of land in the USA just west of Elm Point called Buffalo Bay Point.

Alburgh, Vermont is another, but it has bridges which connect it to Vermont and New York. You don't have to travel into Canada to get there! This whole area is full of islands in Lake Champlain, all connected by bridges and roads. So Alburgh is like an island, just so happens to be a peninsula connected to Canada. Nevertheless, lots of parks around here: might be worth visiting.

So do want to see Point Roberts, the Kentucky Bend, Carter Lake (it has parks) and maybe Alburgh. Most likely not Elm Point or Buffalo Point unless we go to The Northwest Angle again and immediately upon entry drive to Buffalo Point Resort and park, walk half a mile at most south to the lake shore.
