A/V problems

On Sunday the video would not display on our television.

At the time I blamed the Harman/Kardon amplifier/switcher/receiver's hdmi inputs. This was because there was internet chatter that this problem does occur.

So on Sunday I ordered a replacement amp: a Pioneer. It was short one channel for RCA inputs, but a $20 switch for 4 sets could be added in the rare times we would need the remaining item (Atari).

I did not order the $20 switch.

On Tuesday I had doubts we needed the new amp, but it was too late.

Wednesday with the newly arrived amp still in its sealed box, I brought down our bedroom tv and a monster hdmi cable. After doing various swaps of cables and equipment realized the television hdmi input was the culprit.

It had gradually deteriorated over the past couple of years probably. I think the problem with Roku was more to do with the tv hdmi port than the Roku. In the last couple of days it went from accepting hdmi to only accepting non-wide signals to nothing.

I could get it to work with standard video analog inputs but lost the "wings" from the source.

At the time, then, the best I could was to replace our large Samsung television (12 years old I believe) with the smaller newer television (2 years old). Marisa likes the video on the smaller screen, so we will keep that for a while until we can budget in a new larger screen again.

Yesterday I did a little online research and found an alternative that would allow us to use the Samsung television again. We can use the VGA input! I bought a few adapters which will allow the hdmi input to enter through the VGA with some loss of clarity but should allow 1080p (video with wings) display.

So I will spend the warmer months cleaning our basement with a secondary goal besides better navigation and less stuff: creation of a rough home theater! I will set up the Samsung with DVD player.
