To-day the results came back from the lab: no oil contamination from the heating oil tank buried in Marvin's Garden since the 1950's. I trusted there would be none. When I purchased the house in 1999 that report says there was no oil in the soil. Then last Friday the workers were able to do a quick check on the samples and found no oil.
However, these lab results were the deciding factor. I went to get our mail and I saw one of the guys from Dana Thompson Tanks sitting on our porch steps. As I opened the door he put away his mobile phone and said "We just got the lab results. No contamination."
So, time to fill in the hole! The boards were removed and the mechanized shovel began!

The soil is taken from Byron Hill to fill the hole where once the HOT was buried.

The filled hole, roughly graded to the desired slope to planned walkway in front of the house.
The filling job was done in the rain so the ground was sort of gelatinous. This was obvious when the shovel was used to tamp down the clay-sand-soil mix and it quivered! Once the water recedes and it dries out a bit I can resculpt and start putting in the piping and dry-well.
The other good news is that Byron Hill is now ready for new dirt, so as I deal with excess dirt around the house I can pile it up again and maybe only need to do one hauling job.
Because they left it the way I want it I actually saved some money on the total bill!
My next good opportunity to work out there will be mornings of next weekend and then Saturday and Sunday, March 25-26.
