The Sabbatical Begins

Sep 08, 2012 14:58

Alas none of the final things I wanted to do during the time preceding the sabbatical I was able to do. I was too busy at work trying to wrap up a project involving verifying some of the code we release from time to time to our customers. All that work, I believe, paid off and I can be gone from work for two months with a good conscience.

All my Alfred Hitchcock DVDs arrived with the very first DVD to watch in chronological order in our mailbox on Friday: the day I had scheduled to watch it (My thoughts about that movie in another post).

Completing purchases for all Lon Chaney films on dvd has been more of a hassle. I won't need to start on those for a while as I want to focus on Alfred Hitchcock first. My original order of Mr. Wu was cancelled because it was not in stock from that company, so I re-ordered it from another company (through Amazon both times). The order of He Who Gets Slapped was botched by Jungle Books Northwest: they sent me some Jack Palance VHS tape! I have sent 3 communiques through Amazon to this Vancouver, Washington company (right across the river from us) and received no reply.

This was not the only botched sale through Amazon this week. I also ordered French Connection II, the dvd and instead got a two disk set of French Connection. This company responded right away and said they would send FCII out right away. Funny I would have two difficult transactions through Amazon in the same week: I have never had any problems with any orders through Amazon until now!

Today I was just too worn out from the day before to begin my day early and ride my bike (part of my sabbatical plan). In addition to just waking up there was the added problem of getting to a bike: the front room was not cleaned out (one of my pre-sabbatical activities). So I will definitely try to get to that very soon (tomorrow).

I did go to a workshop on preservation of photographs from 10-11 at the Architectural Heritage Center (www.visitahc.org/). It was interesting but mostly re-affirming of what I already knew: I should better protect, organize and store my original photographs and negatives, make digital copies of everything, and display only digital copies. This is definitely something I would like to try and tackle during my sabbatical, so it was a good kick-off for the sabbatical.

After that I went to Lowes and picked up just the two 19.6 inch cement squares that will help complete the install of the rain barrel on the Northwest corner of the house. I have other stuff to get at Lowes for the retaining wall project and the rock garden project, but I will do those later after I get a $25 gift card in the mail as a thank you from my company, my co-worker and friend, M.

I will wait until tomorrow to put in the new squares and do a lot of clean-up work, make a dump run...that sort of thing...tomorrow.
