Big Things!

Someday I must go here to see the Bedford, Pennsylvania coffee pot recently moved and renovated (but NOT by Federal Transportation dollars, as a pack of Republican U.S. Senators would have you believe). It is off what is called The Lincoln Highway.

Actually, I have a great fascination for this kind of thing...functional architecture in the shape of something else. It goes along with my interest in roadside dinosaurs or larger than life depictions of humans. For instance, in Portland there is the Paul Bunyan depiction in Kenton. In Alexandria, Minnnesota there is the Viking "Ole" which was made for the New York's World's Fair and then placed there in 1965. Here I am in 2008 trying to look like Ole who is in the background, but I can't quite get as tall as he is!

I mourn the loss of these kinds of structures which seemed to be quite popular during the last Great Depression: the effort of people with roadside businesses doing what ever they could to pull in the customers. Today we no longer have the Brown Derby restaurant. We have probably lost many others. Others today are deteriorating.
