Spent a couple of hours to dig up a little more of the corner between LBT and the start of the driveway, pulling more plastic grid.
By 1:50 p.m. there was only two feet of 45 inch depth to get to 54 inch depth! It is fairly easy to cleave clay down 9 inches and shovel ahead, but eventually I have to heave shovelfuls of clay over my head into the pile. Doing this with my left arm is not too difficult, but it is not as easy with with my right arm which I must use at the end of the trench.
Two issues with working around noon--glaring sunlight makes it difficult to see...and flies/bees buzzing. They generally don't interfere, but there is the buzz.
I have identified eight feet of holey pipe and a section of pipe I can use to get from near ground level down to the 18 inch mark. So all I need is a 3 inch to 3 inch joiner to extend the holey pipe, a cap, and two 90 degree turns. While I may need to buy, it is possible I have some of these items.
My shopping list:
[ ] landscape fabric.
[ ] 3 inch joiner
[ ] 3 inch cap
[ ] 2- 90 degree turns for 3 inch pipe.
I will re-use a piece of one 3 inch pipe and the landscape fabric I found...plus the thin landscape fabric and the sock I already purchased.
After lunch I went out again around 3 p.m. By 4 p.m. the sun was finally hidden so I could see without glare. I was almost done! I went up to re-organize the dirt pile so it would be easier to throw freshly excavated clay. While I considered stopping, I kept on going because I was getting close. by 4:30 p.m. I was done: 54 inches deep pretty much throughout the 10x3 foot soakage trench!
Tomorrow I will shovel out the high spots and try to get a bit of a slope toward the end of the trench, but basically I am finished. Next: get all my pipe pieces and fabric and adjust/test the system.
Also I expanded the grass area from the alley grass while simultaneously removing rocks, garbage, plastic grid and large concrete pieces buried in 2012. I will do that as a side activity until inspected and approved. Other side activities: cut black berries and add scalloped edging.
