Living Longer

Just read an NPR story about those who live longer. I think I am on the right path.

Need to live longer to do all the things I want to do!

My diet is fairly simple and does not usually include meat...just the occasional fish! I want to get away from processed foods and plan to do so when I have no urgent demands on my time.

I considered long ago that working out did not mean formal exercise or jogging. I consider those generally boring. I would rather take hikes or ride a bicycle to take photographs. Also, dig weeds and make the landscape around our house look nice. When retired I may actually grow food to enhance our diets and also add more physical activity.

Sitting is actually helpful when you combine it with getting up a lot...so stay away from sitting for long periods somehow. I tend not to want to sit down for too long, but when writing or researching there is always that temptation. I don't have a small computer tied to the internet and don't plan on doing that.

This weekend as Marisa and I drove to and from Astoria I saw many of thise highway adoption signs (some said landscape adoption, which is more accurate). Once I get some sort of maintenance routine going for our own lots and our block and get involved with Baltimore Oaks volunteer clean-ups and that sort of thing, I may adopt part of a stretch of nearby highway, too!

Getting involved with local organizations and showing up at city council meetings and community meetings is also on my list of things to do. Hiking with others, bicycling with others, and also orienteering and snowshoeing are also still on my list.

Also, because I am literate...going to special showings of movies, getting more involved with Hollywood Theatre, going to book readings at Powell's and other places, supporting local libraries...all on my radar.

One of the things mentioned is that people who live longer tend to own their own house. It is cheaper overall and because it is your house, you work to keep it up. In return, the house keeps you up by making you more active.
