Today I managed to secure two more people to attend the hearings next week for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. I have Muskogee covered thanks to one my friends here on LJ {{{{{{Bear Hug}}}}}. I have Hugo and Lawton and Okmulgee and likely the hearing in Enid, Woodward and perhaps Clinton. I've got someone I'm asking to go to the Ada meeting or the Durant one and perhaps someone to go to the Poteau hearing. I still need folks for the Idabel meeting, Guymond, OKC. I also wrote a Gospel singer who met me asking her to get folks to make calls to the department.
They will accept input from the public also by phone up until the 16th, though that is less persuasive than attending a hearing, it would still have to be considered by the Wildlife Department. Even if one is out of state, they could ostensibly be hunters who would wish to join the hunt and out of state visitors would have to pay more for a license, so, calling them and saying that Mother Bears with Cubs should have a provision that would protect them from hunters.
For those of you friends who would like to help (beginning next monday) you could call the number (405) 521-3852 which is the department's controlled hunt number, tell them that there should be a provision to prohibit taking a Mother with cubs alongside. The reason for this is that the female population of game animals are always protected to insure the species will continue to grow. Male and Female Bears are hard to distinguish at any distance so females will be taken in the hunt but a cub in October will only weigh between 40 and 70 pounds and will be close at the side of the mother that time of year. There can be no doubt it is a female and also killing the mother will likely cause the mortality of the cubs through the winter months without her protection and the den she would be sharing with them.
Of the 28 states which allow bear hunting the majority make a provision to protect the mothers with cubs. Tell them Oklahoma should do that also. You could also tell them that you would feel better is the quota is not exceeded and do that through a lottery to select licenses, those people who won can be the only ones to take a bear and the other moneys which came from the lottery could be used as extra revenue to fund further research (now that the bear research project is completed there are no more funds alloted to research).
Oestensibly you may be a hunter from out of state who would like to join the hunt and that costs more than a resident of the state, i should think that those inputs would also have weight.
O, I also spoke with my designer. A new fur is being created for me and the third build which will show me to be a four year old bear will be the best yet with $12,000 spent and part of the funds will provide a custom designed (by notable Hollywood costuming artist, Heidi Snyder) period costume fo my handler, Curtis. That project should be completed by late summer or early autumn.
I've made quite a bit of progress and this is the last chance now to protect the Mothers with Cubs in Oklahoma. Last year we provided veterinarian care, food and funding and aided 52 orphan bear cubs, rehabilitating them and returning them safely to their first hibernation with a great chance of a successful life in spring. We also helped find sanctuary for 8 former performing bears and provided funding for them as well.
