Draco's mind reeled as he tried to absorb this shocking information. He knew that Pansy had always liked him, fawned over him when they were younger, but he had always considered that her own problem - a weakness even. He hadn't known about her deeper feelings, and he wasn't sure how to react.
His deep surprise did not show on his pale face at all. If there was one thing he had learned in the last year, it was that concealed emotions cannot be used against you. He had tried to conceal everything about what he was doing with the Death Eaters, even while hiding from the Dark Lord his attachment to Hogwarts. He had mastered the impassive face.
His hands dropped from her shoulders. He had made a decision. He looked into her eyes, and then, with words so slow and deliberate he could have been talking to a child, "You don't love me. You don't know me. I've changed and I'm not sure yet just how much." His voice was quiet.
Apruptly, his tone changed to polite host. Draco talked as if the previous words had never passed between them. His upperclass accent grew stronger.
"I hope, my dear Pansy, that you enjoyed your tea. Your mother is probably with mine in the sun room. Do forgive me for leaving you so soon, but I find that I am unable to continue this conversation at this time."
With that, Draco walked out of the room.
