"Nothing's going to happen. Not when he has a great dad looking out for him."

For a second, Dexter is almost convinced that it is truly Rita's voice echoing in the bathroom. He almost believes that she's talking to him. That she's reassuring him that things will be all right - that their family, their son, will be all right.

The sight of her laying in a tub full of water and blood makes it impossible for him to truly believe it, however. She's no longer staring at him, that blank stare that he can still see and feel as if it's burning a hole right through him, but he doesn't know what's really worse. Seeing her unblinking eyes staring at him, or facing the fact for the thousandth time in just a few minutes that she's dead.

She's dead.

No, a little voice in his head corrects him. She was killed.

"Dexter," the voice of his father says, trying to get his attention, but Dexter can't move. He can't turn to look at him. All he sees is Rita. Her blood overflowing from the tub, the way it stains all the bathroom tiles. He hears his son, his child that won't know his mother. Will he know one day that he was found sitting and crying in his mother's blood? Will he hate him for not finding him sooner? For not getting to Rita sooner? For not killing Arthur sooner so things wouldn't have gotten to this?

"Dexter," Harry says again, but Dexter barely looks at him before turning back to Harrison. He would swear that he would make this right, but how would he do that if he has already killed Arthur? It's not like he can just resuscitate him only to kill him again.

"This is what happens for letting your guard down," a voice says, and Dexter doesn't know if it's Rita, himself, or his father. All he knows is that it's right. He shouldn't have. He should have remained focused. He should have done what he was supposed to do.

But he won't make that mistake again, he promises to everyone and to no one at the same time. He has finally learned his lesson.
