So Aaron Sorkin...apparently a fan of the word "feckless."
The show's going to be awesome. I'm somewhat of the opinion that pilots inherently suck - they're inevitably trying too hard, and way too much exposition gets in the way. And when Judd Hersch went on there to make his beat-over-the-head, preachy Network thing, I was worried this would be in that vein. But things only went up from there.
Yes, it's Sports Night Redux. Casey and Danny are Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry, respectively. The control rooms are identical. We have the evil network exectutives, the feisty female running the show, you name it. But thank goodness it's back.
The cast is ridiculous. Having Felicity Huffman was a great cameo, but only made me hunger for her to be a cast member on this show rather than a regular on the mediocre "Desperate Housewives." Amanda Peet exceeded my expectations, and everywhere you turn, there's someone amazing (woo, Timothy Busfield!). And while, as Kevin noted, the writing wasn't as overtly comical as expected, it's still so solid (when they asked of Peet, "What if she's for real?", I totally got the Sorkin chills).
Television these days has actually gotten rather enjoyable - while we've lost some good programs, from Everwood to Arrested Development, we have dramas like Lost, House and Veronica Mars to keep us happy even when we don't have cable. But there's no television like Sorkin television, and it took his return for us to realize how much we've been missing it.
