Berries (with a capital B) are clearly inherently different from other kinds of plants. In addition to their unique restorative powers for Pokemon and, to a lesser extent, humans, they grow much faster than any other kind of plant -- Cheri Berries, for example, grow in only twelve hours and the plant averages about knee-height on a full-grown adult man. This is completely unheard of in non-Berry plants and has lead some leading researchers to consider classifying Berries in their own phylum, if not kingdom.
