CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Hyuuga Neji
Fandom: Naruto

Summary of Original History: Here at Narutopedia.

AU History: Incredible as it may seem, once upon a time Hyuuga Neji was just a normal little kid. As normal as you could get in one of the oldest magi clans in the world, anyway.

As a child, he frequently ranged freely among the oldest families when the Hyuugas traveled. That's how he came to meet Rock Lee; the only son of a venerable family, completely without magical circuits. They were merely acquaintances at this point, at least from Neji's perspective, though Lee for some reason insisted on viewing him as an 'eternal rival' from the first time he stumbled upon Neji training in his family's yard while the adults conferred.

And while some might have found the young Neji's training regimen and way of life too severe for a child of his age, the boy himself never found it a burden, enjoying the knowledge he picked up from studying other magi at work until such a time as he could receive formal training.

These good times were not to last. The fact that Neji and his father, Hizashi, were of the branch family of the Hyuuga finally caught up with them.

What this meant was that the foremost duty of their existence was to protect the main house. Initially, Neji had found nothing wrong with this--even looked forward to it when he first met his little cousin Hinata at the main house's celebration of her third birthday (he was four). However, that was also the day he was branded with the cursed seal, and he soon found out exactly what 'protecting' the main house meant. The branch family's life and powers were essentially in the hands of the main house -- the seal imposed on Hizashi because he was the younger of twin brothers and then on all of his line would keep their magic subjugated and in the service of their relatives.

His father could not quite hide his bitterness from his young son, who in turn began to look at the main house with fear and a fair amount of anger, because what kid wouldn't be angry to see their father being bullied? By their uncle, no less. The fact that he'd initially taken quite well to Hinata was forgotten--she was just one of them now.

This childish hostility was nothing compared to later -- the Holy Grail War would always be an important trophy among veteran magi, and consequently much dirty-dealing went on behind the scenes before the battle was ever opened. Hyuuga Hinata was nearly snatched right from the heart of the main Hyuuga compound by what was later determined to be an agent from a foreign clan that had used a recent agreement with the Hyuuga as a pretext for weaving a trap. The agent was swiftly disposed of and the plot averted, but the other clan demanded restitution for their (unofficially) lost agent. It was a transparent attempt at stealing the secrets of the Byakugan -- however, without settlement, the situation was certain to escalate, both clans being influential ones. In a largely unknown series of events, it was determined that Hyuuga Hizashi's Byakugan would be sealed, and his body presented in place of his brother's. These were the things that came to pass when Neji was seven years old, and none of the Hyuuga have spoken of the incident since.

Not much time passed before a surprising proposal came by way of the Rock family -- the action had been expected, but the direction it had taken had not -- as their own heir, with whom Neji still sparred and interacted on occasion, was incapable of inheriting their family crest, they wished to take on the Hyuuga branch's heir as their own. The transaction was agreed upon with very little input from Neji; nevertheless, it legitimized his personal plans to participate in the Holy Grail War -- something that had seemed a mere pipe dream considering the main family's control of the seal and Hinata's candidacy for the War.

The disadvantage of the arrangement was that he now had the most obnoxious sibling on the surface of the planet.

From there on out, a number of things came together -- Neji continued his training, proving to be a genius even without the advantage of his native crest as he independently replicated the Hyuugas' most powerful spells one by one. The Rock crest was successfully transplanted, and proved to be an asset to his growing power; Neji's interaction with the cheerfully indomitable Lee and the possibilities offered by the Holy Grail for changing the distasteful traditions of the Hyuuga clan began to blunt his own fatalistic views about life; the Hyuuga withdrew Hinata from the Grail War due to her unsuitability for the conflict. Neji still hasn't entirely shaken free of his bitterness and anger at the clan for using his father's life as a sacrifice -- but he has found a viable channel for that rage and discontent.

Personality: Neji is all-around one of the more serious people you will meet. His reputation as a genius among those who know him and know of him and the convoluted situation his clan's traditions and political intrigues placed him in from birth mean that he spent far more of his childhood training and trying to understand his father's bitterness than on the carefree aspirations of play, eat and sleep that most children pursue.

Seventeen years of anger and grief at the practices of the Hyuuga have produced a proud, stubborn and fairly reticent young man, darkly sardonic and not terribly forgiving of others' shortcomings. While Neji is definitely not the most approachable individual, he is at the same time earnest and competent in any task assigned to him, though he may or may not have a beef with the authority doing so--the importance of the task is evaluated first, the competency of the leadership later. His practical side and calm composure largely manage (and have managed) to mask any inner turmoil.

Despite the prestige of the 'genius' label, it is also a classification that connotes a certain isolation and a forced self-reliance. This may account for a certain part of Neji's basic lone-wolf tendencies, although he is capable of functioning fairly well in a group if necessity so dictates.

Even though he is not, of his own accord, a team player, his experiences with his adoptive family (especially his 'brother') have forced Neji's deal-with-others side back into practice. And although it rarely shows, at his core he values deeply his obligations to those close enough to be friends, and even just close enough to be teammates or companions. Despite his worldview there is no way the genius of Hyuuga would ever allow himself to just sit back in a corner and brood uselessly -- not when there is a perceived way out which he has come to be able to believe in, and a reputation to uphold. His seriousness as well as his stubborn allegiance to whatever cause he has taken up may cause him to push himself beyond his limits without so much as a flinch or a doubt.

FOR MASTERS

Powers/Specialties: Neji uses traditional weapons of his clan as support, for the most part, primarily concealing kunai and shuriken at selective locations on his person.

He also employs the art of the Gentle Fist, a type of martial arts paired with magical energy passed down within the Hyuuga family that does not utilize force so much as strategic pressures and attacks paired with defense. The style resembles nothing so much as the traditional art of taijutsu, its foundation the circle, its movements and techniques patterned in rings and radiating degrees.

This technique paired with the Byakugan, which is a unique property of the eyes of the Hyuuga clan, is a potent and highly classified weapon.

In fact, only the main house of the clan is meant to know most of the more powerful spells available to Gentle Fist/Byakugan users, but Neji, who has been called the current genius of the Hyuuga bloodline, has been largely successful at developing them completely on his own. His Byakugan is, at the moment, capable of catching nearly all attacks within an 800-meter radius. Whether he can react to the perception is another matter entirely. It can also see through solid objects around him, out of necessity for the aforementioned function.

Any preferences for Servant personality?: Pretty much anything goes, though someone who won't let him wallow in his shell for long periods and who won't immediately shank Lee would probably be better.

Player Availability: Timezone is PST. I'm pretty much online through the entire spectrum of timezones most of the time, though specific hours may vary.

Apping with a Servant? No. (Apping with kitbug's AU Rock Lee, though; all backstory details have been cleared with her.)

SAMPLES

First-person:

From an objective standpoint, I'm honestly surprised the Hyuuga were able to survive the Rocks long enough for my transfer to be brokered. They do have exceptional chefs.

There isn't much left to be said, at this point. If I fall at the start of the race, I'll be no better than her.

She's also no longer my enemy for the moment. I shouldn't spare her much more thought until this is over.

Third-person: Step, palm forward and exhale. Step back, inhale, pivot. Rotate the palms and rotate the magic, regulate the breathing and regulate the senses...

Without a living opponent, or even a tangible one, it was difficult to fine-tune his ability to view the intricacies in others' magical circuits, of course; but that was not what Neji sought now. Moving smoothly and with a certain grave grace through the almost dance-like steps of the Gentle Fist, he kept his eyes closed and his other senses wide open, looking for what peace there was to be found in the bustle of Fuyuki, while the rest of the household went about making the seldom-used compound liveable. It would have been difficult if he had not trained himself to this discipline--forcing muscles and thoughts to relax and move fluidly, even when he was more agitated than he cared to admit.

Finally; finally, the Grail War was almost upon them, and while Neji had grown up a soldier in the conflict generated by the very existence of the event and its object, only very recently had his actual candidacy sunken in. He needed the summoning to succeed; he needed to win this conflict; he could not fail. The portion of the Rock clan that had settled in Fuyuki in anticipation (some of them, he suspected, merely here for the spectacle; some had not known his face, though they'd recognized his eyes), along with myriad guests and hangers-on, had been feasting and preparing for some time. He'd declined the invitation to join them tonight, their rowdiness and excessive scrutiny for the past week not something he would choose if he could help it.

This was much more important: honing his skills, concentrating on the ability he knew surpassed that poor little main branch mouse. He continued to repeat the motions, soothing the restlessness in his fingers and feet, grounding himself once again.
