Fancy-Schmancy Restaurant, Mainland, Early Friday Evening.

A.J. really couldn't tell if the cab driver was more relieved that he'd finally rolled up to A.J. and Beauty's destination or if he'd been somewhat amused or if he couldn't even understand the two of them as they, typically, practically did not stop talking about random crap the whole way there. When they pulled up, A.J. told Beauty to hold on a ( Read more... )

The poor driver probably did wonder how the pair managed to prattle on endlessly without running out of breath or things to say, but Beauty enjoyed the drive immensely. It was only her second time across the causeway, and the first time she'd been far to nervous over the car and the traffic to relax and enjoy herself.

Plus, of course, she was with A.J., which pretty much guaranteed a good time.

She couldn't help but grin as he held her door and offered his arm, and she felt strangely adult, walking into the restaurant next to A.J. It was a fascinating experience, and Beauty stared around at the lights and the decor and the prettily-dressed people.

"This is really beautiful, A.J."

"So are you," A.J. said, without even realizing that he'd even said it out loud until a second later, the realization hitting him in the form of a very red face and a ducked head. God, that probably sounded so corny. Thankfully, he could clear his throat and move on from that to give the maitre'de his name and they could be lead to their table.

Well, Beauty didn't seem to think it sounded corny, if the pleased, wide-eyed look she gave him was any indication. Her cheeks turned pink and she stammered a soft thank-you, and reached down to hold A.J.'s hand as they were taken to their table.

Thank God her sisters had been drilling good dining etiquette into her head since she was a baby, Beauty thought. Although she was still certain she was going to do something in the wrong order or drop her glass or embarrass herself in some way before the night was over.

Once they were seated, and given their menus, Beauty glanced at hers uncertainly, and then gave A.J. a pleading look over the top of it.

It was a good thing that the menus were long because they worked well for A.J. to hold his over his blushing face, too. This was totally not the sort of place for a guy like him, and he felt really awkward. Much more like a kid trying to be all grown-up and everything and he nervously looked over at Beauty from the top of his menu, meeting her eyes over hers, hoping that she liked this, that she didn't just think he was a total dork, but unable to keep from smiling a little as he asked, "I think they made some of these words up."
