Emacs Question

I'm learning to use Emacs.

Question: What is the meta key on the new powerbooks? And yes, I know I can use Esc, but 1) that's different than the meta key and 2) its small and in the corner, so it doesn't really speed things up.

UPDATE: Terminal menu -> Window Settings... -> Keyboard

Then select `use opt as meta'.

You are using either carbon emacs or a gui emacs for x11? Please tell me your not using emacs in the terminal?

For a while I had to use a keyboard that had the escape key near where normal keyboards would have an F13 key, if they had an F13 key. I don't know whose bright idea it was to place the escape key there, but apparently it was a semi-common layout (some DEC thing). Anyway, I got into the habit of hitting control-[ for escape.

It's a portable solution, and useful on laptop keyboards where escape and ` and F1 are too close to hit without looking at the keyboard. If you get used to it, though, it's hard habit to break.
