One of the Iris plants in my back flower bed has bloomed. Usually they do not bloom until mid-June. Maybe after 10 yrs they are finally settling in to their new home? (These came from my Mom & Dad's house just before it sold.)
In the raw nature division, a hawk/falcon swooped down on a yellow-shafted Flicker in our back yard (at the lake). A crow was hanging around causing so much commotion that we got to the window and saw events unfold. Lucky for the Flicker something startled the hawk and it let go. The Flicker quickly scooted underneath a nearby rowboat and the hawk flew off. It apparently survived as we did not find any bodies or feathers around when we later looked.
I sort-of feel sorry for the hawk, since it lost its breakfast, but I like seeing the Flicker around the yard, so I hope it got away unscathed.
