Burkhardt to Succeed Swenson in London's Hair
Steel Burkhardt, an original company member of the Broadway production of Hair who is currently appearing in the ensemble of the West End production of that Vietnam War-themed musical, will take over the role of Berger at London's Gielgud Theatre later this month.
Burkhardt's manager told Playbill.com that the singing actor, who also made his Broadway debut in Hair, will begin performances as Berger May 31 at the London venue. He succeeds Will Swenson, who created the role in the Broadway and London revivals and was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance.
The London production of the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair, featuring members of the 2009 Broadway cast, officially opened in London April 14 at the Gielgud Theatre.
Hair began previews in the West End April 1. Tony-nominated Broadway director Diane Paulus repeated her duties for the production with choreography by Tony nominee Karole Armitage.
Featuring book and lyrics by the late Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot, the 2009 Broadway revival of Hair earned the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
The original Broadway design team includes set designer Scott Pask, costume designer Michael McDonald, lighting designer Kevin Adams and sound designer Acme Sound Partners.
The London production is being produced by the Public Theater with Cameron Mackintosh and Broadway Across America.

The London transfer of the current Tony-winning Broadway production of Hair will shutter at the Gielgud Theatre Sept. 4.
According to a statement from the London publicists, "Cameron Mackintosh and the US producers have decided not to re-cast Hair when the Broadway company finish their London engagement. The final performance will be 4 September 2010."
When Diane Paulus' production crossed the Atlantic, its original Broadway company came with it, led by Gavin Greel and Will Swenson as Claude and Berger, respectively, who had both been Tony nominated for their performances on Broadway.
Swenson was already set to depart the production early, and as previously reported on this site, is being replaced by Steel Burkhardt, also an original company member of the Broadway production of Hair who is currently appearing in the ensemble of the West End production. He will take over May 31.
Diane Paulus' production, which was first seen at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in the summers of 2007 and 2008 before transferring to Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theare in March 2009 (where it is still running), won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. In addition director Paulus and choreographer Karole Armitage were respectively nominated for Tonys for Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography. Michael McDonald, Kevin Adams and Acme Sound Partners were also nominated, respectively, for Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical.
Hair began performances at the Gielgud Theatre April 1, prior to an official opening April 14. It was originally booking through Jan. 8, 2011.
