Another Night ‘On the Town’ for Jesse Tyler Ferguson

By DAVE ITZKOFF

Jesse Tyler FergusonRon Tom/ABC Jesse Tyler Ferguson, not singing, as Mitchell Pritchett on “Modern Family.”

Until “Modern Family” follows the lead of “Glee” and performs its own musical episode, viewers will probably not have much opportunity to hear Jesse Tyler Ferguson show off his singing voice (possibly to his relief). On “Modern Family,” the hit ABC comedy, Mr. Ferguson plays Mitchell Pritchett, an uptight lawyer raising an adopted daughter with his partner, Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet).

But Broadway saw him first: Before Mr. Ferguson was a sitcom star, he played Leaf Coneybear, a home-schooled contender in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” and made his debut in the 1998 revival of “On the Town” as the sailor Chip, a production that originated in 1997 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Mr. Ferguson will briefly reprise that role on Monday night at a concert with the New York Pops paying tribute to Frank Sinatra. The concert also features Michael Cerveris, Norm Lewis, Cheyenne Jackson and Frank Sinatra Jr., as well as Michael Urie and John Tartaglia, who will join Mr. Ferguson on “New York, New York.”

During some recent down time on an appearance at “The Rachael Ray Show,” Mr. Ferguson spoke with ArtsBeat about his transition from Broadway to television, and why he thinks he can “sweep the floor” with Mr. Stonestreet, his “Modern Family” co-star, in any singing competition. These are excerpts from that conversation.

I should start watching Modern Family. The Class did justice to exactly no one in it.
