Josefina Scaglione Brings Her Favorite Pieces of Argentina to the West Side

Josefina Scaglione, the beautiful native Argentinean who landed the much-coveted role of Maria in Broadway’s current West Side Story revival, traveled halfway up the globe to make her Rialto debut in a role she loves. Being so far from home means the Tony Award nominee takes special care to make her surrogate home base at the Palace Theatre as warm and welcoming as possible, from the Latin music playing in the background to the hot cups of traditional South American mate tea she brews on her table. Scaglione welcomed Broadway.com into her personal space to show off the five of the items that bring a little slice of the familiar to her foreign dressing room.

“My music is always here-Brazilian, European, Latin American, mostly. I like peaceful, chill music after hours onstage crying! And there’s always music playing in my room.”

“This is my wall of pictures. It’s a collection of things from home, letters from friends in Argentina, letters from cast members who have left the show and notes from family. It makes me very happy to look at it.”

“These are my candles. I want to get in my dressing room and feel like I’m in a good smelling, peaceful environment that’s harmonious and feels like home. Citrus like orange are my favorite.”

“This is mate-we drink it a lot in Argentina. It’s not like coffee where you drink it specifically to energize you, it’s just more of a tradition back home. Mate does energize you, but it does it in a more natural, herbal way. The tradition is to pour in the water, drink it, pour in more water on the herbs, and pass it to a friend for them to drink. We’ll do that for hours! I drink it every day of my life.”

“This is Ganesha, from India. I used to always have elephants around my home but not know why. Then I learned they were related to roots and being grounded. This last year was very crazy for me, and I always want to stay grounded no matter what, so he comes with me to keep me that way.”
