‘Hair’ Seeks Would-Be Hippies

If Woodstock had been held in winter - and was much smaller and took place on a city street and was orderly and had venti Starbucks lattes - it might have resembled the scene outside the Public Theater in the East Village on Thursday morning.

That’s because underneath the hooded parkas and knit mittens were peasant blouses, headbands, beads and other 1960s-inspired clothing worn by Broadway hopefuls in line for a non-Equity open casting call for the revival of “Hair,” which opened last April and is looking for replacements for its original cast.

The crowd began lining up outside the Public at 1 a.m., according to a spokesman for the show. In addition to a headshot and 16 bars of a song, performers were asked to bring canned goods for a food drive benefiting City Harvest, which distributes food to more than 500 charitable organizations throughout the city.

Inside a small rehearsal room, Jessica Henderson, 19, auditioned with the song “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss).”

“I’m here because I’ve finally found a musical that I have a connection to,” she said in the lobby after her audition.

Some performers came in costume, or so it seemed. Kristen Penner, 25, who said she grew up the daughter of hippie parents in Baltimore, performed Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” in a purple T-shirt, floor-length yellow skirt and no shoes.

“This is my normal wardrobe in the summer,” she said.

Jenny Gersten, the associate producer at the Public and of “Hair,” said that by day’s end she hoped that at least 500 of the more than 950 people standing in line would get a chance to audition. Callbacks will be held on Saturday.

“It’s important to the spirit of ‘Hair’ that we do this,” she said, gazing at the fairly organized scene unfolding in the lobby. “These are the show’s original spirits.”
