‘Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson’ to Close
By
PATRICK HEALY The new Broadway musical
“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” a favorite of critics that has had trouble catching on with theater-goers, will close on Jan. 2 after three and a half months of performances, the producers said on Wednesday.
It is the second new musical in two days to announce a closing notice;
“The Scottsboro Boys” will end its run on Dec. 12 after just two months. The production, which cost $4.5 million to mount, will close at a loss to investors, as will “Scottsboro” - 2 of
the 10 big-budget new musicals with original scores that are taking a chance on Broadway this season.
The show, an emo-flavored musical that portrays Andrew Jackson as the nation’s first celebrity president, had critically acclaimed runs at the Public Theater in the spring of 2009 and 2010. Those productions did not consistently sell out but the musical moved to the larger Jacobs Theater on Broadway this fall because the Public and the co-producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel believed that a broader audience would ultimately embrace “Bloody” as the critics had. Still, the Public was unable to persuade enough investors to cover its half of the $4.5 million capitalization for Broadway, forcing Mr. Richards and Mr. Frankel to step in with more money.
The production struggled to sell tickets from the get-go, though it had its best week at the box office over the Thanksgiving holiday, grossing $442,113 - indicating some tourist interest in the show, which probably accounts for the producers’ choosing to run through the potentially lucrative Christmas and New Year’s Day weeks rather than close sooner like “Scottsboro.” “Bloody” is written and directed by Alex Timbers, with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman and stars Benjamin Walker as Andrew Jackson.
Source Not cool, universe. This show is fantastic, and Benjamin Walker deserves a bloody Tony. So glad I got to see it in October.
