And Then There Was Nun: Patina Miller Will Star in ‘Sister Act’ on Broadway
Now here’s a bit of news we presume Whoopi Goldberg won’t walk out on. The coming Broadway production of “Sister Act,” the musical adapted from her hit 1992 comedy, has found its lead, and to those of you who were hoping the New York transfer would retain the star of its original West End production, your faith has been rewarded.
Patina Miller, who was nominated for an Olivier Award for her performance as Deloris Van Cartier, the undercover nun who’s secretly an aspiring disco star, when “Sister Act” was presented at the London Palladium, will reprise that role on Broadway, press representatives for the show said on Monday. This latest production of the musical will begin previews at the Broadway Theater on March 24 and open on April 20. It features a score composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and will be directed by Jerry Zaks.
Donna Murphy to Lead Roundabout Musical
The Roundabout Theater Company has announced plans for a new musical starring Donna Murphy. The show, “The People in the Picture,” with a book and lyrics by the novelist Iris Rainer Dart (“Beaches”), tells the story of a New York grandmother, to be played by Ms. Murphy, who was once a Yiddish theater actress in Poland before World War II. “Bubbie” now longs to tell her Holocaust tales to her granddaughter, despite her daughter’s desire to leave the past in the past.
Ms. Murphy, who is also an accomplished film and television actress, last appeared on Broadway as Lotte Lenya in the Manhattan Theater Club’s production of “LoveMusik,” for which she received a Tony nomination. The show features music written by the early rock ’n’ roll songwriter Mike Stoller (“Smokey Joe’s Café”) and Artie Butler, who wrote and arranged music for artists like Louis Armstrong and Joe Cocker. Leonard Foglia, whose recent work includes “Let Me Down Easy,” Anna Deavere Smith’s one-woman show about health care and the body, will direct, with musical direction by Paul Gemignani (“Pal Joey”) and musical staging by Andy Blankenbuehler (“In the Heights”). Previews are scheduled to begin at the American Airlines Theater on April 1, with an opening on April 28.
