‘Hockey Musical’ to open TIFF
All singing, all dancing, all ... hockey, eh?
That'll be Score: A Hockey Musical, a star-studded Canadian musical romance that opens the 35th annual Toronto International Film Festival.
On Wednesday, fest honchos Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey announced the important opening night film at a press conference held at Canada's Hockey Hall of Fame. The festival traditionally begins with a Canadian movie, though never before with a Canadian musical comedy.
Written and directed by Michael McGowan, Score: A Hockey Musical stars Olivia Newton-John, singer/songwriter Marc Jordan and newcomers Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald. The movie features cameo appearances from several famed Canucks, including Nelly Furtado, Walter Gretzky and hockey star Theo Fleury, and a soundtrack that has 19 original songs and musical contributions from Barenaked Ladies, Olivia Newton-John, Amy Sky, Marc Jordan and Hawksley Workman. And Margaret Atwood, who sings in the film.
Yeah -- that Margaret Atwood.
The movie concerns a sheltered teen who becomes a hockey sensation, much to his intellectual mom's dismay. He then has to learn how to handle fame and all its pitfalls.
The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off September 9 for 11 days of the best in Canadian and international movies. The festival is a world-renowned celebration of cinema that annually brings the biggest names working in film -- on both sides of the camera -- to Hogtown. Featured films, visiting celebrities and other highlights of the upcoming festival will be announced over the next few weeks.
Ticket packages are now available online at tiff.net/thefestival or at 1-877-968-FILM. The boxoffice is located at 2 Carlton Street, West Mezzanine.

Ahem...yes: MY COUNTRY IS AWESOME. Hockey and musicals, my two favourite things, finally together. I don't care how bad this will probably be, I'm gonna love it no matter what.
And I know this isn't Broadway related, but it's a ridiculous piece of musical news, so I thought I'd post it.
EDIT: Also someone check out around 1:37 and tell me if that's Idina Menzel.
