The Mephistos show last Sat got off to a rocky start. The night had a S&M/Bondage theme, so I figured I'd play a bit slower more sexual/sensual set. I opened with Seedy Films by Soft Cell (from Non Stop Erotic Cabaret, one of the my all-time favorites albums). Midway through it, the bartender comes up and tells me the owner wants me to play faster songs, "Like City Club". I was pissed off by that and played a bit of synthpop and moved into a very angry old school set. As an industrial DJ, angry is never a problem, but it goes to show you the club owner's mentality. Music for them is just content to fill the dance floor and drive bar sales. Except the dance floor was taken up by the band setting up, so nobody could dance anyway.
On the plus side, there was a big crowd (faux poser bondage events really pack em in these days), and the set seemed to go over well. Once I chilled out and got into the the music I had a good time. The playlist is
here. Thanks to
scary_guy for inviting me out!
I'm not spinning at Necto on Monday after all. The reason why isn't my story to tell, but I'll say two things: 1. Two scheduling wrongs don't make a right, and 2. It's tacky to find out your DJ gig was cancelled on a chance reading of someone's LJ.
