Man lives freely only by his readiness to die, if need be, at the hands of his brother, never by killing him.

[Pause.]I don't know how I can talk about what circumstances it might be all right to kill people under. I haven't ( Read more... )

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?

All right, Comrade. I don't think what I did for the Factory made me strong, I think it made me disgusting.

[Pause]

And I think what makes you weak isn't being without the Party, it's being so deliberately blind to the fact that what you did when you were a part of it was wrong, because it's so much more comfortable not to have to exist on your own.

No, Comrade, these things don't become true just because you want them to be true! Being obsessed with power and control doesn't make you strong, it just makes you desperate. It just means that you need something to prop yourself up with because there's nothing else there.

You started this conversation, Comrade. I'm just having it with you.

Comrade if you could actually make anything you wanted true, then we'd all be living under the rule of the Party by now. You're using the idea that you want power and to hurt and control people, to distract yourself from the fact that you could actually have a bearable life here if you just let yourself.

You're right, Comrade, you could be so much better than this, but the Party wouldn't be what made you it.

Yes, Comrade. They got me, I got me, you got me, the people back home who killed me got me, the invisible collective, Comrade.

And do you know something, Comrade? I don't think that the Party, or the Factory could change me back anymore.
