The park was built on the grounds of the former Yuezhong shipyard. The early 80s to mid 80s was the flourishing period of the shipyard as China opened its economy to the world. However, the shipping industry took a downturn after that period and the shipyard never recovered from that setback. It was finally closed in 1999 after 45 years of operation.
Much of the shipyard still remains in the park. The dry docks were converted to become a part of the lake. A workshop became an art museum while equipments like a gantry crane are scattered over the park, as a tribune to the park's history.
