Domestics

Ianto looked up as Jack joined him on the step of his sister's flat. They were officially there to baby-sit Mica, but since she was playing with the other children on the estate, they weren't having to work very hard.

"This is nice," Jack observed.

"It is. Bit of a change from running down weevils," Ianto agreed.

Rhiannon had asked Ianto to baby-sit Mica for an afternoon so she and Johnny could attend a special parent event with David at the school. Jack had found out what his plans were and asked if he could come along. Ianto had been surprised, but touched by Jack's interest in his family.

Jack smiled and kissed Ianto's temple. "I wouldn't say no to a bit of the quiet life now and then."

"Me neither," Ianto said, leaning into Jack. He sighed happily when Jack's arm came around his shoulders instantly. He never would have guessed that Captain Jack Harkness would do domestic so well. "I wonder if - "

He broke off when a sharp scream made them both look towards the street.

"Shit!" he yelled, already running towards Mica who was lying on the pavement underneath her pink bicycle. He heard Jack close on his heels as they hurried to help the little girl.

"Mica? Sweetheart, what happened?"

"She hit a pile of sand and just went down," one of the estate boys said almost admiringly.

"Mica? Are you okay? Did you hit your head?" Ianto asked worriedly as he helped his niece to her feet. He walked her over to the nearest patch of grass and knelt in front of her, checking her over for injuries. The other children drifted away, leaving them alone. Ianto glanced over at Jack who had righted the bike and was wheeling it over to them. "Jack? Do you think she's hurt?"

"I'm fine, Uncle Ianto," Mica insisted, giving him a teenager-worthy eye roll.

He held up two fingers, pleased to see her eyes tracking normally and that she could tell it was only two fingers. He checked her hands, brushing some gravel and sand out of the abrasions on her palms while Jack hovered.

"We'll need to get your hands cleaned up, but I think you're all right," he said with a happy sigh.

Mica rolled her eyes again and said, "Duh."

Ianto gave her a grin and tapped her nose with one long finger, chuckling when she wrinkled it like always. Jack smiled at them both and stepped aside when Mica went to take her bike from him. Jack and Ianto's eyes met over her head and they shared a moment of pure relief. Then Mica cried out again.

"What is it, honey?" Jack asked, taking the weight of the bike back from her.

"My arm hurt when I pushed my bike," she said, pointing at her wrist. "Right here."

Ianto went pale while Jack gently squeezed Mica's wrist. Sure enough, as soon as he put a little pressure on it, she whimpered. Ianto cursed under his breath in Welsh. Great, I broke my niece. Rhi's gonna kill me, he thought despondently.

"Do you think it's broken?" he asked Jack.

Jack nodded. "Maybe. It's a bad sprain at the very least."

"Broken?" Mica asked brightly. "Can I get a plaster? Will we get to go to the A&E like on Casualty?"

The two men groaned. So much for an easy day of baby-sitting.
