"Fukky, look up. The stars are really pretty don't you think?" Jin pointed up to the constellations twinkling in the night sky.

"They're OK enough," Fukuda nodded non-commitally and Jin's shoulders sagged slightly with disappointment.

"You should be more romantic, Fukky!" Jin chided gently. Fukuda shifted awkwardly and twiddled his thumbs, missing the brittle humour in his lover's voice entirely.

=====

"Stars are really nice, aren't they, Akutsu-san?" Dan asked and he wheezed painfully. "So pretty."

"Hmpf. How the fuck would I know?" Despite his harsh words, Akutsu craned his neck to look along the direction of Dan's pointed finger. "What the hell. They all look the same to me."

Dan laughed tiredly. "Akutsu-san will never be able to appreciate the stars, will you?"

"They're there. No big deal about them," Akutsu shrugged negligently. "Why'd you like them so much, anyway?"

The younger boy looked up into the night sky again, big eyes suddenly sad. "Because they're so old but they last for so long."

His voice dropped to a pensive whisper. "It's like they live forever."

Not like me.

The unspoken words hung heavily in the air between the two boys.

"Akutsu-san, I want to go back to my room please," Dan abruptly changed the topic.

"But you've been out only ten minutes!" Akutsu exclaimed.

"It's OK. I've seen what I wanted to see."

Dan was quiet on the trip back to the hospital room, his face shadowed with thought as Akutsu rearranged the bedsheets around him with uncharacteristic care.

"Thank you for bringing me out," Dan told Akutsu. He mused sadly, "It's been so long since I was out. I just wanted to see the night sky for the last time."

"Don't say stupid things like that!" Akutsu reprimanded sharply. "Of course you're gonna get better and get out of hospital!"

Dan smiled through his pain and he patted Akutsu's cheek. "Don't be that way. It's not like you to lie, Akutsu-san."

"You?! What the - " Akutsu swore under his breath as he was filled with futile rage yet again. What kind of warped world did they live in that such a young boy could be so sick?

=====

They were in the park again at night after another impromptu one on one. Fukuda had won this round but that was because Jin had let him so that he could have one last happy memory of them together. He had decided that it was going to be their last game; there would be no more after this.

"It was a good game, wasn't it, Fukky?" Jin asked him.

Fukuda nodded. "Aaa."

"Too bad it'll be the last one for us."

Fukuda's head snapped up at the words, jaw dropping in shock.

"I can't do this anymore," Jin said, trying his best to keep his voice steady but some of the pain seeped through anyway. "I keep talking but you don't seem to respond at all."

"Jinjin..." Fukuda replied, alarm filling him rapidly but Jin waved his words off.

"You're like a star Fukky," Jin smiled through his tears as he pointed a finger upwards. "So nice to look at. But so cold and far away."

Fukuda shuffled awkwardly on his feet but did not say anything. Jin waited patiently, hoping desperately for a some kind of sign that he had made a wrong decision. But as always, Fukuda disappointed him.

"See you around during the next inter-high then, Fukky," Jin waved half-heartedly to his now former-lover and turned around and walked away. He bit his lip against the pain as he noted that Fukuda made no effort to call him back.

=====

"I borrowed a book on astronomy the other day from Sengoku, didja know that?" Akutsu asked as he lit up a cigarette. "Nice shit though I can only recognise Orion."

There was no reply but Akutsu continued talking anyway. "You would have preferred to see Vega or Altair, though. Since you like Tanabata and all that sappy stuff."

He took another drag on his cigarette, watching the smoke curl and float away in the crisp morning air.

"And I joined the tennis team again. I thought, what the heck. Nothing better to do with my time. Besides Sengoku wouldn't leave me alone till I agreed."

Akutsu carefully placed the bunch of flowers on the tomb marker. "But I still prefer you as manager though. The new one sucks big time."

===========

Akutsu stumbled along the road unsteadily, beer can in one hand as the other gripped his tennis equipment unsteadily. He had taken the afternoon off to go down to Kanagawa to see what the fuss about Rikkai Dai was all about. But he had lost his way and chosen to get smashed instead. Rikkai could bloody well wait.

"Watch out!"

Akutsu heard an alarmed cry and he turned to see a boy on a bicycle swerve sharply to narrowly avoid hitting him. Not that it helped much because he tripped and fell over his own shoes and he cursed his own stupidity.

"Are you OK?" that same voice called out worriedly to him, a strong hand shaking him by the shoulder to rouse him out of his stupor.

"Huh?" Akutsu looked up to see a boy with deep brown eyes staring worriedly at him. The last coherent thought on his mind before he passed out was that the eyes were really bright and sparkly, just like Dan's silly stars.
