Yuffie knew that Vincent loved her even though he couldn’t say it. It was the simple things that made her realize it- like the way he would push her behind him at the slightest sign of danger, or how he would run his fingers through her hair when he thought she was asleep.
She knew that there were a lot of demons in his past at that it would be a long way back from that dark world for him. It would take a lot of time before he could bring himself to say he loved her- if he ever became able to at all- and she had come to terms with that.
It wasn’t as though that didn’t want him to tell her he loved her, but she wasn’t going to push it. She would take him how ever she could get him, and if that meant without a term like ‘love’ popping up, then she knew she could learn to live with that.
So, it came to her as a surprise that one night, when they were both content and spent, curled up in her bed with her head on his chest, that he didn’t run his fingers through her hair the way he normally did, that he didn’t press a kiss to her forehead. It was a surprise that the air seemed to take a serious tone to it.
His hand rested against her naked arm, fingers digging into her arm in a way that was just shy of painful. “Yuffie.”
“Hmm?” She gazed up at him, all innocence and curiosity. It made him feel completely monstrous.
“I know you love me.”
“Duh, Vinnie. Gawd, everyone knows I love you. They all knew before you did.”
“I know that, Yuffie.”
“So? Why are you bringing it up?”
“If you could be quiet, then perhaps I would tell you.”
Yuffie closed her mouth with a snap, lips forming a small pout as she laid her head back on his chest, resisting the urge to kick his leg and call him a ‘meanie’.
“I have never said it back to you, yet you keep saying it. Why?”
“Because when you love someone, you love them no matter what, Vinnie. Even if they don’t love you, you love them. So, I take you however I can get you. Love or not.”
“How ever you can get me…” He paused, seeming to consider her words, so full of honesty and innocence.
“Love is acceptance, Vinnie. When you love someone, you accept all of them. Flaws and all.”
“All of them, hmm?”
His grip tightened around her, drawing her closer to him. His lips met her forehead, a small, comforting gesture. “Yuffie?”
“Hmm?”
“I love you, too.”
