Once, not long after he had first joined the Turks, Veld had assigned him to go on an undercover job in one of the worst areas of the slums. Reno, who had not quite finished training, was sent with him, purely because he had grown up in that area.
Reno had been the one to get the information they needed, talking to people while Rude stood there, silent as he usually was.
He remembers Reno leading him into one of the seedy clubs in the area, trying to track down information. It was no doubt a place where people could get hurt, rather quickly. There had been a young girl, probably no older than fifteen, being dragged into one of the corners, kicking and screaming, one man cradling her against his chest, the other hoisting her skirt up above her hips.
They watched her for a moment, listened to her crying, watching as the man who had lifted up her skirt started to thrust inside of her while she begged for him to stop, but turned away. This was life in the slums, and they were undercover. They would not interfere.
For what seemed like months afterwards Rude would hear that girl’s screaming in his nightmares, and wondered if maybe he should have said something after all.
