Fencon Post

So, Otter and I left Austin for Dallas around 9 am. We got to Fencon around noon and after lunch started hitting up the panels. A con that early on friday is fun cause there's very few people there so theres more conversation. Went to the panel on Madiliene Lengle and it was interesting but nothig that I didn't know and already appreciate. Miss the fact that I will probably never read about Meg at age 40. Meg was one of the character that I read in 5th grade. She had glasses and braces and trouble at school and at home and I so identified with her. She was smart, perhaps too smart. She made me learn that grown ups can't fix everything, that being different wasn't wrong and to question, think and decide for yourself. The other thing that Meg and Madiliene taught me was that science, spirituality and magic were all part of the same whole. A very special lady and I will miss her, but rejoice in all she taught me and treasure her words that she left to all of us.
Saw Steve Perry's panel ( not the Journey singer) and he is very funny. Had a great time listening to him. Eric, Tree, Margaret, Mike and Harmoni showed up at various times and we had fun seeing them. Also got to have dinner with Maggie, that was fun. Sat was more of the same, except I got really irritated with the panel on Hienlien. Ok, this was a man who shaped many of my thoughts and patters of the way I am. Brilliant writer, who did not back away from expressing ideas on male/female thought process, war, art, love, science and just about everything else. He was one of the first feminists, because he thought that females were smarter and more competent than men. But the panel was about what was your favorite book, etc, etc, etc. And the audience, myself especially knew more about his works than the panel did. ANNOYING!!! Anyway, Margaret bought a LOT of filk music and I got a "things I learn from the Princess Bride" tshirt and an anime tarot deck.
That evening we heard Tom Smith sing, including "Hey, Its Cannon" which is about the fact that Hermoine Granger's bday is the same date as international talk like a pirate day. For the song look at Tom Smith Online. com. He also wrote a wonderful song called a boy and his frog about Jim Henson and Kermit. Sniffle
Anyway, didn't go into work today cause I felt crappy and had left my cat and Eric and Otters. Hard to go to work when you KNOW that they will be laying you off soon. Ick.
