happened this past week while away for work. I went to the Public Library Association Conference. It was hands down, the best library conference I've been too. So many great workshops, the vendors were great and I saw loads of fun people. Before we went my boss sat me down and gave me a pep talk about networking so while we were there I introduced myself to a ton of publisher's reps and to the speakers at the workshops I went to. Handed out a boatload of business cards. Already got invited to a publisher's breakfast this Friday in Manhattan that my boss said I can go to. Gotta tell Jeff about that, because I need to be in the City by 9am. Might take the bus in from here and then take the subway uptown. On the way home I will probably end up taking a cab because we are going to be getting some free books. That could be anywhere from 2 or 3 to 10 or 12. We'll see. But I digress. Wed night my friend CL who knows everyone in the world of Readers Advisory (helping people pick out books is the easiest way of describing it) took me to dinner with 20 r so of the Rock Stars of Readers Advisory. The ones who write for the major trade magazines and are asked to do panels at national workshops and who write books on the subject. It was great fun. For the rest of the conference (Sat am) I kept running into these people and they were so nice. Sat with them, ate with them, drank wine with them....it was really great networking.
So great that in fact on Thursday or was it Friday afternoon, doesn't matter. CL and I were at the Exhibits at Booklist (trade magazine)'s booth having wine and cheese when one of these rock stars came over and started talking to her. She introduced me and we all had a nice chat. He was from the Williamsburg, VA library. I mentioned how much we like Williamsburg and try to get down there now and then. Would love to see the library. He said to call him and he would be happy to show me around. Cool. Then it gets to the cool and strange part.
He turns to CL and says, "CL, how would you like to write a book?"
CL says, "Sure Barry. On what?"
Barry responds, "On Romance Readers Advisory."
CL - "Okay."
Now she turns to me and says. "llene, want to write a book with me?"
Me, "ummm, sure CL."
CL, "Great, Barry Ilene and I read lots of different romance so we would be able to cover me. That okay?"
Barry, "Sure, if you say she is good, then she is good. I'll email you a book proposal."
Barry walks away and I look at CL. "Did that just really happen?"
CL, "Yes."
OMG, OMG, OMG, I think we are going to write a book!!!!!!!!
Now of course this is in the infant stage. Hell it is a zygote but how freakin cool is that? I might write a book. Told my boss and she said that she is going to bring it up to the Board of Trustees that I am being considered for this option and would then please freakin promote me to Assistant Director lest the library lose this amazing, valuable, knowledgeable librarian?
So now I wait for things to happen and even if it doesn't pan out...I'm still a very happy camper and am going to try to submit more book reviews to Goodreads and to my blog in hopes of then sending them as writing samples to one or two of the trade magazines. We'll see.
In the meantime now I have to go get some dishes done and then it is off to the Lake clubhouse to book it for Hannah's Bat Mitzvah party. Then I am getting a FREE haircut, color, makeover at a salon by Mountain Creek ski resort and finally it is off to work from 5 - 9.
