in ancient China, a boy of Tamahome's socioeconomic background would very likely NOT be able to write, let alone write such a note as he did to Miaka in her note book. Hotohori would probably be able to read it considering what his mother put him through, but who knows how that could be stretched.
Actually, the face that Tasuki can write is astonishing as well...though he prolly knows how to write the characters for 'phantom wolves' and that's about it.
Yes, the Suzaku is a surprisingly literate bunch (Chirko reading/writing? duh! though he is a SPECIAL case. Mits reading/writing? prolly. Chiri? likely. Nuriko? hmmm, there's a debatable one) but Tamahome the poor village boy and Tasuki the mountain bandit? I doooooooooon't think so.
