Break Free

I was going into my fourth hour of studying for my upcoming finals and I couldn't concentrate any longer...But I must. Just get past genetics and I'll call it quits...only a few more pages of notes! I tried hard to shake the weariness out of my body, pushing myself to focus for just a while longer.

"Nanalie! Where are you?" I looked to my doorway to see who was coming into the dorm's living room towards my room. Jasmine poked her head in...her face carrying a warming smile. It was so infectious I just had to smile back.

I met Jasmine my freshmen year of college. I wasn't thrilled about having a roommate. I was very introverted and liked to focus on my studies, making my social life very limited...or should I say non-existent. I'm not complaining though. Books were very safe, while people on the other hand caused much trouble. I learned this through observing people during my quiet lunches alone in high school. Too many arguments. Too much drama. They didn't seem to mind me eavesdropping in their conversations because they never noticed. I was invisible to them. I liked it that way though. So when I moved to college, meeting my roommate was the only thing I dreaded. When I arrived at my dormitory, no one had seem to have arrived yet so I became hopeful that the administrators didn't assign me a roommate. Well that happiness was short-lived. As soon as I started unpacking my clothes and neatly hanging it into my closet, a dark-haired, mocha-skinned girl stood in the doorway, suitcase in hand, smiling brightly. Wow she's so pretty! "Hi! I'm Jasmine Pierre. You must be my new roommate," the girl greeted me, offering me a hand to shake. After I snapped out of my daze from the sight of her beauty, I took her hand and shook it. "I'm so happy to be here. This is going to be good experience, a new step in life," Jasmine rambled on as she opened her suitcase to start unpacking. "Oh I forgot! I'm sorry, but I didn't catch your name."

"Um, it's Nanalie Nicheols," I said somewhat quietly, fumbling with my clothes. "Nanalie? Wow,  I've never heard of that name before. I like it! I want to know everything about you. We're going to have so much fun getting to know each other!" Jasmine kept on talking as I listened. "You don't talk much do you?" Becoming aware that she was talking to me, I looked up quickly to see her staring at me. I looked down at my shoes and shook my head. She laughed. I looked up at her, wondering what was so funny. "Gosh, you make it seem like I'm an alien or something. Do I scare you? You're all the way over there by your bed and you won't even look at me or utter a word." Jasmine walked over to my bed and took my hands. She squeezed them softly and smiled. "I'm really friendly, I promise. I don't bite or spit fire, so don't keep your distance. I want to be your friend so stop freaking out on me." She giggled, nudging me on the arm. There was sense of sincerity in her voice that assured me that she really did want to be my friend. I smiled back. "Okay," I said softly, nodding my head.

"That's better. Hey, do you want to grab something to eat and talk? We can unpack later. I want to get to know my roommate!" And with that, she grabbed my hand and dragged me out of that dorm before I could answer.

It's been four long years and it turned out that Jasmine had become my best friend. She had taught me to loosen up and to have fun, to become more social in general. She was really popular among the people here at the university. Everywhere she went, students and teachers both would greet her by her name. I think it's that warm smile and bubbly attitude that's hard to forget. Just seeing her puts people in good moods. While she majored in communications, I was a pre-med major and had my MCAT's to study for before getting accepted into medical school. I was cramming in some last minute studying to make sure I was going to do well. But having a job at the same time didn't give me time to sleep so I had had a hard time concentrating these past few weeks. "How long have you been studying N? You look like you need to rest. Have you eaten?" Jasmine came in and sat on the corner of my desk, looking concerned. "I haven't had time. I just got in from my lab and I had to work the morning shift this morning at Cracker Barrel. I didn't have time to get lunch because one of the girls didn't show up at work so I worked overtime. I barely even made it to my lab."

"N, you need to stop and eat something!"

"No I'll eat when I am finished with this chapter. It's only a few more pages."

"You can't keep on doing this. For the past three weeks, all you have been doing is working and studying. You hardly eat anything or sleep. You're starting to look pale. You're going to work yourself to death."

"I'll be fine Jas. It'll be over after the MCATs. Then I can sleep and eat all I want. It's only a few more days. I'm taking it on Friday."

"Okay...Just...take care of yourself. You know you aren't always going to be lucky to have me around to take care of you," Jasmine smirked.

"I know, I know. God gave me an amazing roommate and best friend!"

"And don't forget it!" We both giggled and hugged each other.

"Oh I forgot. We got mail," Jasmine announced.

"From who?" I was actually kind of glad that she interrupted me. I laid down my glasses and rubbed my eyes as she went through our mail, picking out mine.

"Hey you got a letter from Korea," Jasmine announced, handing it to me. "Do you have relatives there? I thought you were Vietnamese? Open it!" I looked at it curiously. "I don't know anyone there." I opened it carefully, trying not to rip it messily. I was kind of OCP (obsessive-compulsive personality) like that. I pulled out the letter, along with what seemed to be plane tickets. The letter read:

Ms. Nanalie Nicheols, we from Good Entertainment would like to congratulate you on winning the Shinhwa Summer Love contest. Your prize as you already know is a trip to Korea to meet Shinhwa, along with a date with each member separately. Your plane tickets are attached and when you arrive, there will be a person who will pick you up and take you to your hotel. Your schedule will be given to you when you arrive in Seoul on Saturday May 26th. Once again we congratulate and hope you will enjoy your "prize." Sincerely, Good Entertainment

"Oh my God! Are you kidding me? I didn't even sign up for this," I yelled in content disbelief, jumping out of my seat. "What? What is it?" Jasmine asked, taking the letter from my hands as I paced around the small bedroom, mumbling to myself. Jasmine read the letter and laughed outright, "Yes! I can't believe you actually won!"

I stopped and looked at Jasmine. "What? What do you mean? Did you know about this?"

"Yeah, of course. I was the one to sign you up. I know how much you love Shinhwa and I know you need to get out more and take a break. You would have never signed up for it yourself, so I did it for you. If you didn't win, you wouldn't know I did it, but if you did, you would be estatic. Aren't you glad I did it?" Jasmine beamed, walking towards me to hug me. I was horrified. I couldn't do that now. I had my MCATs! "Jas, I can't go now. The MCATs are on Friday! If I don't take them, I can't go to medical school." I looked at the plane tickets. Twelve forty-five on May 25th. "Jasmine the tickets are for this Friday at noon. I won't be out of testing by that time. I can't go."

"Nanalie you are not doing this to yourself. You are about to give up on the biggest opportunity of your life and I am not about to let you do that! Why won't you let yourself do something that you really love? You gave up your music for your parents because they wanted a doctor for a daughter. All you do is study, you never have any fun. I know you want to go. Do something for yourself," Jasmine pleaded, her eyes tearing me apart because I knew it was the truth. "Please?"

I didn't know what to do. I couldn't just give up 4 years of hard work just because of something that I wanted to do. I would never get another chance at meeting my favorite band, but I just couldn't do it. "Just tell me you'll think about it. It's only Monday. Think about it." I looked at Jasmine and nodded. What would I do? Jasmine ran towards me, but I couldn't see her very clearly. Everything was hazy and darkening. I heard her muffled yell, "Nanalie, are you okay? N, say something..."
