It's hard to believe. He died so suddenly. I was over at my father's today for a sudden visit and it was on the television. I can't believe he's gone.
I remember my sister and I wearing out the vinyl Thriller record we had, repeating Thriller over and over again and dancing in our bedroom. I remember us begging for the song to be played on the jukebox of every restaurant we ever went to. We'd dance and sing along to every song he sang on the radio and when we finally got MTV...(laughs) when one of his amazing videos would come on, we would stop whatever it was we were doing and had to sing and dance along. My sister and I shared some really good times because of Michael and I'll love him forever for that.
No matter how eccentrically he lived his life...buying bones, having a pet monkey, sleeping in oxygen chambers, living in an amusement park... it doesn't matter. The man was a musical and creative genius. Some people have to be taught and groomed and polished to be entertainers, but Michael Jackson was born to do it, his talent as much a part of him as his lungs or heart, his skin and his blood. He was thrust into the spotlight as a child, grew up on stage and in front of cameras. He grew up right before the world's eyes and stayed there.
He was the butt of late night talk shows. He was scrutinized by the media, followed around by them like he was the centerpiece of a zoo. But he was just a man, living his life and parenting his children to the best of his ability, even if his judgment wasn't always so great. He was only human and therefore, made human mistakes.
We should not look back at him and remember him for those mistakes, but for the artist he was, dancing and singing his way into the thread of the world's pop culture, for now and always.
I think the one thing I will always remember him best for was his epic music videos. If not for him, music videos would not be what they are today. He made music movies, not just 3 minute videos, even creating makeup and special effects still used in multi-million dollar blockbuster films to this day. He used the medium to send messages about the world, race relations, poverty and tried to help make the world a better place through them and his music. Not to mention, he would use them to yell at the media to leave him be and let him live his life. Here's some of my favorites.
