If Mike were a woman, everyone at that firm would think they were having sex. And the vast majority of the audience would consider it a foregone conclusion for where their relationship was headed. Their interaction actually strongly reminded me of Lois & Clark at the Daily Planet (any incarnation), with a similar flavor of flirty banter.
There's always a bit of a...frustration when relationships are that slashy. Because in a world without homophobia, it wouldn't be just a ship-tease. The show would follow through on that kind of set-up. But in the world that we're in, slashy pairings are still mostly just constant teases with no intention of doing more. It's irritating.
