Hmm. They used the silly plot device and the diversion of the farting and the pranks to explore something that's kinda at the heart of the show - Merlin, magic, and Arthur reacting to the idea of his father executing Merlin for magic.
And, oh! Arthur set up a trap for Gaius to find out for himself what was going on! My heart! It flutters! He didn't need Gwen to tell him to listen to Merlin.
The Arthur/Gwen stuff in the episode worked pretty well for me. It works better when it's lighter.
