Star Trek 2009: Fic Recs United (plus some thoughts)
First, four things:
1. I wrote something for the anon XI kinkmeme and am currently debating whether to repost it on my journal (which would effectively take away the anonymity). So. That may or may not happen.
2. Have been rewatching TOS for... purposes and damn those dresses are short. Much shorter than the skirts in the new movie.
3. All of the interview material and just about everything that you can find about the new movie talks about the 'epic bromance' of Kirk and Spock. For people who are not Original Series (TOS) fans, it might be interesting to know that the original series kinda started out as a three-lead show. There's been a sort of... winnowing away over the years (and I include the movies in this), where while Bones is a great friend of Kirk's, the Kirk-Spock bond is prominently displayed as the most important relationship in either of their lives. In some ways, this is really reflected in the focus of the new movie -- the creation of Kirk and Spock as a team is pretty much the entire point of the movie. And, in a true illustration of what's changed, Spock gets his own outside emotional bond ala Kirk with McCoy. So, we end up with a three-tiered framework.
Kirk & Spock are our primary protagonists -- we get childhood scenes and scenes with each of them that is entirely about their own emotional journey. They are mirrored -- Kirk loses his father and Spock loses his mother. The movie takes them from an antagonistic relationship to one with mutual respect.
Bones & Uhura each have a primary supportive connection with either Kirk or Spock and a mildly antagonist working relationship with the other one. Both have some plot-relative use (Bones gets Kirk on the ship; Uhura finds the transmission that lets Kirk know what's going on), but their primary purpose in the plot is for Kirk/Spock to have someone to connect to emotionally.
Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty are defined primarily in their capacity as crewmembers (back in the days of TOS and the original movies, Uhura was in this section). Their aid to the story is mostly plot-based, rather than character-based.
4. Successfully raided my mom's collection of ST novels -- Ishmael, How Much for Just the Planet? and Dwellers in the Crucible were what I was specifically looking for (and I found them) but I also nabbed a few more.
And now, there are XI fic recs:
1. Five Times Jim Kirk Called Spock 'Sweetheart' by raphaela667. Shockingly enough, this is K/S. It's a quick, enjoyable read.
2. Paradoxical by anowlinsunshine. K/S. This was written for the kink meme originally, and it's very much with the porn.
3. The Human Heart by jenlynns-fics. K/S. Spock accidentally turns human because of a transporter accident. It's fantastic.
4. Fight to Win by allbutwon. K/S; Uhura PoV. Kirk likes to fight and he hates to lose.
5. Discovered Check by
waketosleep. Spock learns that Kirk's been keeping a certain talent from him. Gen, with slashy leanings.
6. Obscenities by
corpus_invicus. K/S. Originally written for the kink meme. Basically, Kirk has noticed that Spock swears under his breath sometimes when the computer really frustrates him. And he thinks it's hot, so he encourages the behavior.
7. Litany by
corpus_invictus. K/S. It's the anniversary of the destruction of Vulcan. Spock is mourning alone and then Jim comes along.
8. Similar Activities by mithrigil and puella_nerdii. K/S. Spock provides Kirk with 'character references' (it's like inviting someone to see your etchings).
9. The Ups and Downs of You by raphaela667. Established K/S. Spock accidentally gets de-aged. Kirk deals.
10. When the Levee Breaks by
waketosleep. K/S. Kirk is out drinking, Spock goes out looking for him; they both find more than they expected. Originally written for the kink meme (which is about halfway through it's second full post -- very impressive).
11. Yellow by libraryofsol. K/S. Aliens flowers make Kirk high (guess what happens next).
