Torchwood: Apparently Unpopular Opinions

Mar 19, 2008 18:22

Because I'm currently stuck at school (I have two finals today -- I've done one and must now wait around until the other one starts), I can't watch Torchwood. This doesn't, however, mean that I can't talk about it!

Also!

I HAVE SO MANY UNPOPULAR OPINIONS IN THIS FANDOM. But I'll stick with yours.

1) I watched Torchwood out of order, but I really was drawn to Gwen right away. She's just really tough, feisty, caring and flawed. And I adore the gap in her teeth. It's charming. I was initially wary of Gwen being the heart, but the show made it work for me. Because they still allowed her to be a person. She's the connection to humanity but that doesn't mean she's always the moral center, which the case often is. I find this interesting.

2) THANK YOU. Related: he's not monogamous. He can and does have deep feelings for both Gwen and Ianto. Having feelings for Gwen doesn't invalidate what he feels for Ianto or vice versa. DID ANYONE WATCH DOCTOR WHO WHERE JACK FELL IN LOVE WITH BOTH THE DOCTOR AND ROSE?

3) This I don't agree with 100%. I think it's clear they always planned something - Ianto was the only one Jack flirted with in the beginning and Ianto protests were flirty. I just think that Cyberwoman and the lack of real follow up made the entire thing difficult to swallow. I really like the pairing, but it would have been nice to have more than a few moments of tension and real bonding. I'm not sure how we got from ANGRY HATRED to comfort sex.

That said, Jack/Gwen is developed loads better and it's been there since the beginning.

3. Yes! I just rewatched "Everything Changes"

Jack: And he looks really good in a suit.
Ianto: Now sir, that's sexual harrassment

HAHA THAT EXCHANGE WAS AWESOME. *is shallow*

In promo stuff Ianto was set up as a love interest as well. It was always in the planning, but I do think the series one was really damn jarring in the development. I adore them a lot in series two - I have nit picks here and there but I'm glad to see that they're learning from their mistakes.

She is so fab! This pair of shows does quite a good job creating women who feel real and like good people without them always being right.

Indeed! I'm baffled when people think that Jack going on a date with Ianto = entering a monogamous relationship. This is Jack! He flirts with robots!

Yes! We didn't see enough of the process. I mean, people were seriously considering that Ianto was sleeping with Jack in order to get his guard down so that he could commit revenge murder. Which maybe is what TPTB wanted us to think. I don't know!

100% agreement.

I really tend to love the women in this verse. NOW GIVE TOSH SOME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

I think people are afraid that if Jack doesn't just love one person he doesn't love deeply at all. To which I say: wtf, I have seen few people in fiction love as deeply as Jack.

I've fanwanked a lot of it, but I didn't like it. They were so adorable in series two thought that I forgave a lot. BUT I'M NOT SO MUCH INCLINED TO ANYMORE.

I think what baffled me the most were people saying Jack/Gwen came out of nowhere this series.

That may well be it. And, like you, I think those people are blind. Jack's love isn't just free -- it's quite deep. He loves strong -- his love for the Doctor and Rose after over a century and many (many) deaths is proof enough of that.

I think what baffled me the most were people saying Jack/Gwen came out of nowhere this series.

*points*

Yes, exactly. What show were these people watching?

It was just so clear to me that he loved both the Doctor and Rose and he continued to do so for over a hundred years. And rebuilt Torchwood in the Doctor's honor. And suffered for at least a year thinking that Rose could be dead.

So I don't see how he can't love both Gwen and Ianto in a romantic way. And he relates to them in very different ways. And his love for Tosh and Owen are there too.

I tend to find characters who love lots of people more interesting, so I LOVE Jack.
