Television: Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles and New Amsterdam

So, the first season of T:tSCC has finished airing and I really adore the show. I actually went back and watched T2 the other day and Linda Hamilton looked wrong. That's how much I've bonded with the new Sarah Connor on this show.

I love the way each of the four 'family' cast members have a unique relationship to the other members -- Sarah and John are so well-done, I love Sarah's interaction with Cameron, and I am really enjoying the Sarah and Derek relationship. The show has done a great job of developing the characters and their relationships -- I loved finding out in the most recent episode that Derek figured out that Kyle was John's dad all on his own, and his birthday gift was perhaps the most thoughtful gift I have ever seen anyone give. The tension between Derek and Cameron is really enjoyable (he hates her so much, but they're actually quite scarily alike at times). John's really great, too -- I love his scenes with Cameron.

And then we have Detective Agent James Ellison (intentional Sentinel reference or a coincidence?) and Charlie, who are not dead. Yay! I'm particularly thrilled that Ellison isn't dead. And that he's smart. I like him a whole lot.

I really hope that the show gets renewed.

I also watched the first episode of the show New Amsterdam, which is about an immortal detective based in (of course, given the name of the show) New York (and he goes by the name 'John Amsterdam' because television needed yet another character named 'John'). Now, the main question to ask is this: what does this immortal detective show give us that others haven't?

From the pilot, it looks like the show is a romance about John and the city of New York as much as it's anything else. He came out to New Amsterdam when it was first settled and has stayed mostly there since he's been immortal. I love the various references to how well John knows this city and its past. It makes the show feel smaller in scope, more personal, than Angel's references to the past all over the world in Angel. In contrast to Angel, as well, John's immortality is a reward instead of a curse -- a chance for him to find a true love and grow old with her.

I really like his new partner, Marquez. The actress played Gaia over on Rome but her character on this show is much more likable (which is intentional -- we were supposed to hate Gaia's guts).

I'm uncertain about how I feel about the doctor who has been implied to be his true love. I don't know her well enough to like her yet.

I like his friend who knows the truth and I really enjoyed the various guest stars. I love that this show has already acknowledged that gay people exist.

Generally, I like it, though apparently the buzz isn't good on it continuing next year.
