Various: Cards, Het Shipping, Gay Movies Where No One Dies
So, this year I haven't responded to any of the 'would you like me to send you a card' posts. This is because I suck so much at reciprocating. I'm going to try to actually remember to send cards to my family this year and, if that works out, try to join in fannish card sending next year. Because I want to, but I'm horrible at follow-through, which is something I'm working on.
I've really gotten back into het shipping recently, which y'all may have noticed. I mean, I never stopped shipping het couples as well as slash, but there have been a lot of interesting relationships and interesting female character recently. While I still like McKay/Sheppard, I find that I'm preferring McKay/Carter -- and while Jack/Daniel is the Stargate pairing of my heart, I really like Daniel/Vala as well. I'm shipping a het couple over on Torchwood (I'd ship Jack with Ianto, except I'm pretty sure he's still hung up on the Doctor and Rose). I'm very much a Rose/Doctor shipper, I'm completely adoring three het ships over on Smallville (mind you, this doesn't mean that I wouldn't read Clark/Oliver! I'd love to, if anyone's seen any good fic!), and I'm all about Angela and Hodges on Bones (swings! cutest thing ever, man), plus the Bones&Brennen friendship is kicking so much ass. And with the new museum director, Bones is now officially a show with an equal number of male and female cast members, I think. Which is really cool.
I certainly haven't abandoned the slash (I'd prefer Michael/Sucre to Michael/Sarah and my love for Dean and Sam shines bright), but there are tons of great female characters that I'm enjoying watching shows explore. And, as someone who identifies as a feminist, that is a spectacular thing.
Oh! And thawrecka expressed a wish to know about some gay movies where people don't die and I gave her a list. Thought I'd reprint it here for y'all, if any of you are having the same problem.
Maurice is really good and was made back in 1987. Based on a book written in 1914. It has a great story and has both bittersweet and purely happy endings.
Imagine Me & You is a really cute lesbian movie that came out recently.
Straight-Jacket is American, gay, and upbeat. The movie was done in 2004, but it's set in the '50s.
Wilby Wonderful is a great (Canadian) flick that has a burgeoning gay relationship as part of the plot.
Hegwig and the Angry Inch is a movie with a whole lot of anger in it, and some symbolic death, but ends with quite a bit of hope.
Saving Face is an adorable lesbian flick about a Chinese-American woman who is having trouble juggling her mom's expectations and falling in love with another woman. Really, really adorable.
Heights is a fantastic movie that has a gay relationship as the pivot point.
In & Out (the Kevin Kline movie) is actually pretty cute.
Beautiful Thing is another great British gay-themed movie. Very realistic and powerful.
And, of course, if y'all know of more good gay movies where no one dies, both thawrecka and I would be very interested.
